All proceeds from this book were donated to Anne’s Children’s Chemotherapy Ward, Mercy University Hospital, Cork on behalf of the community of Passage West and the Lower Harbour area.

Beyond the Cut and Cover, based in Cork’s lower Harbour, continues the journey started in A Passage in Time and goes from Glenbrook Ferry to Ringaskiddy.

While it is part two of a three part it can also be enjoyed on its own, as they are all individual books. Angela’s intention in writing this trilogy is to update the history of the lower harbour.

This book is entitled ‘Beyond the Cut and Cover’ because it contains any details of the lower harbour, beyond the tunnel in Monkstown, Co. Cork. The tunnel in Monkstown was built for the purpose of the train passing through Monkstown along the seashore. In order to do this the workers had to cut through solid rock. A system was set up to cut away some rock and cover the rest of the completed work, hence the nickname for the tunnel the ‘Cut and Cover’. The tunnel has always been referred to locally as ‘The Cut and Cover.’

Richly supported by lively anecdotal information from local sources, these were times when the streets of Passage West resounded to the clamour of shipbuilding, when the ferry to Carrigaloe was little more than a rowing boat, then the wealthy regarded the air of Passage West as a health-giving tonic and when the town’s principal water supply was a single pump.

More than just a history, “A Passage in Time” includes a pull-out map and a comprehensive walking tour of Passage West and its hinterland. Past and present meeting fascinating description of each neighbourhood and each item of heritage from Rochestown to Glenbrook. Supported by photographic illustrations throughout, this tour will bring a new understanding of the extraordinary story that is the development of Passage West to this present day.

This book is a celebration of Passage West in pictures, verse and story, photographs which were lost in time until they were retrieved from the people of Passage West and the surrounding areas.  Their generosity shines through in this fantastic selection of photographs.  Most of these have never been seen before.

This was a community project, a project for the community compiled with the help of the community, funded by the community.
