“There are no limits to what you can achieve in life except the limits that you accept in your mind.”
Angela’s courage and achievements belie the deformity she was born with. A native of County Cork, Angela, was born with two clubfeet, and had her first operation at only 3 weeks old. She spent most of the first 10 years of her life in hospital, eight of these in a care home in Dublin, which gave her a Dublin accent, much to the amusement of her Cork-raised siblings.
Growing up in Dublin meant she didn’t meet her Cork siblings until she was an 8-year-old in a wheelchair. Without any education in the care home, it meant that her formal education was delayed until into her adult life.
Despite her challenges, Angela began school when she was 24 years old. Starting with a three-year course for illiterate adults at the College of Commerce in Cork, she continued through many courses and attended University College Cork (UCC). She later went on to become the author of six books, including a trilogy that together meticulously document Cork’s Lower Harbour.
On January 6th 2021 Angela accepted the prestigious title of Irish Ambassador for the Clubfoot Association and as someone born with two club feet is delighted to be able to help others in the same situation.

Cork Woman Makes
History
Angela’s books have raised over €20,000 for Marymount Hospice in Cork. Her second book, written for the Children’s Chemotherapy Ward at Cork’s Mercy Hospital, raised a further €7,000.
Despite not starting her education until she was a young mother of two children, she is the first and only person to ever undertake the monumental task of researching and writing these history books.
People all over the world are now able to read about Cork’s beautiful harbour, with photographs never seen before, spanning over two centuries. Students particularly will benefit enormously for generations to come.

“Angela is simply an inspiration. She is someone who has overcome significant adversity in her life to achieve some amazing accomplishments.
As a local representative, I am particularly delighted that she has published her trilogy on the history of the lower harbour which is a unique piece of work. I am thrilled that Angela is now making her work accessible to everyone on the website.“

“A number of years ago, I met a lovely lady, Angela Sweeney from Passage West. We both volunteered at the Marymount Cancer fundraising shop. I always felt there was a sadness in her eyes despite her laughter.
The Brown Boot poem and painting were inspired by the story behind the smile.
